摘要：Semantic communication is an emerging research area that has attracted significant attention recently. Despite this interest, there is a lack of a unified framework for characterizing semantic communication. This talk introduces a new conceptualization of semantic communication and formulates two fundamental problems: language exploitation and language design. We argue that language design can be framed within joint source-channel coding theory, supported by a comprehensive end-to-end distortion metric. To tackle the language exploitation problem, we put forth three approaches: semantic encoding, semantic decoding, and a synergistic combination of both in the form of combined semantic encoding and decoding. Furthermore, we establish the semantic distortion-cost region as a critical framework for assessing the language exploitation problem, characterizing the achievable region for each proposed method. For each of the three proposed approaches, the achievable distortion-cost region is characterized. Overall, this talk aims to shed light on the intricate dynamics of semantic communication, paving the way for a deeper understanding of this evolving field.
作者简介：曹琦，西安电子科技大学广州研究院硕士生导师。毕业于西安电子科技大学（本科、硕士）和香港中文大学（博士），曾访问美国加州大学圣迭戈分校。研究聚焦信息论与编码、语义通信及组合优化，主持国家自然科学基金青年项目及香港联合基金子课题，参与国家重点研发计划。在通信领域顶级期刊与会议发表论文20余篇，包括5篇TIT。
